Week 6: Pirates sail to a 31-0 win over Lakewood.

By Rob Trautman

Lakewood, OH- There was a chill in the air for our Friday Night High School Football game, between the Rocky River Pirates (2-1), and the host Lakewood Rangers (1-4). A GLC matchup that was a rivalry game for the Battle of the Bridge.

The First quarter had early momentum for the Lakewood Rangers as Rocky River running back John Bebie fumbled in their own territory giving the ball to Lakewood at the Rocky River 28 yard line. The Rangers couldn’t capitalize getting their field goal try blocked with three minutes left in the first quarter. Both teams couldn’t get much offense going, punting back and forth before the first quarter would end at 0-0.

In the Second quarter, momentum would swing to Rocky River and the Pirates finally would get a big run from QB Braedon Spies to set up a first and goal. Then, from there it was running back John BeBie as he would punch it in from 2 yards out. The Pirates would go for a two point conversion and get it to make their lead 8-0 with 10:53 left in the second quarter.

Then, a key Interception returned for a touchdown by once again John Bebie. This would be a key play that kept the Pirates rolling. The extra point was no good and Rocky River led 14-0 with 4:58 left in the second quarter. Turnovers would play a big part in this game as the Pirates would get another interception with 2:11 left in the second quarter. Rocky River would get down the the Lakewood 11 yard line where they would get a 28 yard field goal from kicker Mack Massad. At halftime the score was now 17-0.

After half the Pirates received the ball to open the third quarter where they would go on a 14 play 75 yard drive that would be capped off by a 1 yard touchdown run by John Bebie, who did everything on this night. The extra point was good and the score was 24-0 after three quarters. On this drive it was a heavy dose of running back John Bebie and a great connection with quarter Braedon Spies and wide receiver David Rosenberg. After three quarters it was Rocky River leading 24-0.

In the fourth quarter there was a lot of running the ball , but with 8:56 left in the game the Pirates would throw as quarterback Braedon Spies would connect with wide receiver Stan Heuler for a 12 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and Rocky River would sail to a 31-0 GLC win over Lakewood.

Rocky River would improve to 3-1 on the season as Lakewood falls to 1-4. Next up for the Pirates is playoff football as they host Lexington. Lakewood travels to Barberton to take on the Magics.

Player of the Game
