Brecksville, OH- On a dark and stormy night… we had a OHSAA Division II Region 6 quarterfinal match up between two teams from the Suburban League. The Barberton Magics came into this match up the 13th seed in the region and faced the high powered 5th seeded Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees.
The Bees were able to score first thanks in large part to the run game and RB Garrett Kubitz’s power running style led to a 1 yd TD run. a missed xp made the score 6-0 with 8:15 remaining in the first quarter. Bees would score again on 51 yd TD pass from QB Joe Labas to WR Luke Ganim, the 2pt conversion failed and the score at the end of the first quarter was 12-0 in favor of the Bees.
The second Quarter of the contest began with a 23 yd field goal from Aiden Minnick to give the Bees a 15-0 lead midway through the quarter. That is when mother nature cause a roughly 90 minute weather delay. After the weather delay the Bees picked up right where they left off with a 40 yd TD pass from Labas to WR Jeremy Jonozzo , a failed extra point made the score 21-0 in favor of the Bees. Barberton was finally able get on the board in the waning moments of the quarter thanks to a 41 yd TD pass from QB Chanden Lee to WR Charles Hornacek, a successful extra point made the score 21-7 after the second quarter.
The weather delay resulted in game moving right into the third quarter, and the Bees wasted no time methodically marching down the field, Garrett Kubitz would find the end zone from 20 yds out for his second rushing TD night, a successful extra point made the score 28-7 with 11:01 left in the third quarter. The Magics would answer with a score on the subsequent drive, Chanden Lee would find WR Hayden Macko for a 9 yd TD , a made extra point made the score 28-14 with 7:54 left in the quarter. Bees QB Joe Labas would find the end zone twice to close out the quarter; the first came on a 16 yd TD run, 2 pt attempt failed. The second came on a 52 yd TD pass to Jonozzo for his second TD of the night. at the end of the third quarter Brecksville held a 41-14 lead over Barberton.
Barberton would open the fourth quarter with a 55 yd TD Pass from Chanden Lee to WR Kaige Lowe, missed point made the score 41- 20 with 11:33 remaining in the game. Bees RB Garrett Kubitz took over from that point with two rushing TDs, once from 32 yds, the other from 47 yds. Kubitz finished the night with 4 TDs, and the Bees now led 55-20 with 7:44 and a running clock left in the game. The Magics would score TD, a 11 yd TD pass from Lee to Hornacek, and also secure a safety in the final quarter. However that would not be enough as Brecksville-Broadview Heights comes away with a 55-30 victory to move on in Divsion II Region 6.
The Magics were led offensively by QB Chanden Lee who finished the game with 4 TD passes. WR Charles Hornacek had 2 TD Receptions of the night for the Magics. Barberton is 3-6 on the year, and currently do not have a game scheduled for week 10.
The Bees were led by RB Garrett Kubitz who had 4 rushing TDs on the night. QB Joe Labas finished the night with 3 passing TDs and 1 Rush TD, WR Jeremy Jonozzo had 2 TD receptions on the night. Brecksville-Broadview Heights will move on to the Division II Region 6 Semifinals and will face the winner of the Highland/Avon quarterfinal match up.
