Week 5 Video: Hudson Explorers vs Highland Hornets

Hudson looked to remain undefeated in 2020 as they traveled to Highland to take on the Hornets. Hudson’s offense got of to a quick start and never looked back. The no huddle offense seemed to be too much for the Hornets as they started the scoring quickly due to a recovered Hornet fumble.

The Hornets were able to cap off a nice second offensive possession with a touchdown run by Lukas Stiles. The game was tied at seven midway through the first. From there, Hudson would reel off 28 unanswered points. QB Jacob Paltani led Hudson with 103 yards passing, 42 yards rushing, and two touchdowns. Hudson overpowered Highland with a two-headed monster in the run game. Aiden Lal had nine carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Drew Lightner finished with 12 carries, 147 yards and two touchdowns. Both averaged over 10 yards per carry in the game.

Highland would score twice in the second half. Once on a two yard run by QB Aaron Filis and again on a 13 yard pass from Filis to Max Kohmann. With the 42-21 victory, Hudson improves to 5-0, while Highland drops to 2-2. Hudson will play host to North Royalton in week 6. Highland will host Barberton.

Week 4: Avon Lake runs past Amherst 21-7 in an SWC showdown.

By Rob Trautman

Amherst, OH- Week 4 of the 2020 Season brought us to a battle atop the Southwestern Conference. There was a chill in the air as the two SWC teams were ready to square off from Mercy Health Stadium. Amherst comes in undefeated at 3-0, whereas Avon Lake is 2-1 looking to continue their winning ways after their Week 1 overtime loss versus Avon.

Avon Lake received the opening kickoff and made a statement. Establishing a long opening drive, featuring their senior star running back Gage Duesler. The Shoremen went 80 yards and capped it off with a 23 yard touchdown run by Shoremen RB Gage Duesler. Avon Lake led 7-0 with 8:45 left in the first quarter. Both teams were physical on both sides of the ball as drives stalled by both teams. The first quarter would end with the Shoremen leading 7-0.

That is what the score would be after one quarter.

In the second quarter the physical defense began to pickup. Amherst’s defense sacked Shoremen QB Michael Corbo 2 times on their first drive in the second quarter forcing a punt. The Comets established a nice long drive with runs by Torre Weatherspoon and passes from Senior QB Tyler Brezina to Ty Weatherspoon. The drive stalled by holding penalties that would force a punt with 4:16 left in the second quarter. The following series the Shoremen drive down the field and would finally strike in the second quarter with another Gage Duesler 6 yard touchdown run with 1:31 left in the second quarter. At halftime Avon Lake led the Comets 14-0.

In the third quarter Amherst came out with an impressive 12 play drive down to the Avon Lake 17 yard line. Comets running back Jonathan West looked to break free for extra yards when the Shoremen defense stripped the ball away and Avon Lake Senior Nathan Cikalo recovered the fumble at their own 3 yard line.

The third quarter would end with the Shoremen leading 14-0 and still on a drive that would continue into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Avon Lake continue to run the ball with Duesler, but did balance the passing game with Michael Corbo. The Shoremen’s passing game finally hit on a 29 yard pass from QB Michael Corbo to WR Mitchell Fedders that was thought to extend the Avon Lake lead to 21-0. A holding call would bring that play back.

The Shoremen would continue the drive running the ball with Duesler as he would get his third touchdown on the night with a 26 yard run with 3:56 left in the fourth quarter. Avon Lake led 21-0.

The Comets weren’t ready to fold yet, as they would score on the ensuing drive with a 65 yard touchdown catch/run by Amherst running back Alden Steele from QB Tyler Brezina. His speed out ran the Shoremen defense to keep the Amherst hopes alive as the score was 21-7 with 3:25 left. An onside kick try by the Comets was recovered by Avon Lake.

That is how this game would end as the Shoremen would improve to 3-1 (3-1) with a 21-7 road win over a tough Comets team who falls to 3-1 (3-1).

Week 5, Avon Lake will stay on the road taking on North Olmsted, as Amherst travels to battle Olmsted Falls.

Notable Stats:

Avon Lake Shoremen

RB Gage Duesler had 25 carries for 204 yards and 3 TDs

Amherst Comets

QB Tyler Brezina 10/14 119 yards 1 TD

SOT Podcast Game of the Week: Buckeye Bucks vs Elyria Catholic Panthers

By Sean Duffy

Elyria, OH- A huge match up in the Great Lakes Conference as the Buckeye Bucks (1-0) travel to take on conference stalwart Elyria Catholic Panthers (1-1). Both teams are coming off wins in week 3 and will look to secure their place a top the conference and playoff standings. Two hard hitting teams on a crisp September night, it is a recipe for a Great Lakes Conference show down.

The Bucks were first to score thanks to 62 yd TD pass from Buckeye QB Jayden May to Kaymen Marshall, a made extra point gave the Bucks a 7-0 lead with 9:35 left in the first quarter. Elyria Catholic would not be down for long as the would score on their next possession with an 18 yd TD pass from Panther QB Steve Navalinsky to Jack Kenneally, with 8:21 left in the quarter the score was all tied 7-7. The Panther Defense got in on the scoring action as DB Jack Budinger intercepted a Jayden May pass and took it 44 yds for the pick six, a missed extra point had the score 13-7 in favor of the Panthers at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers were deep in Bucks territory to open the second quarter, but the Buckeye defense was able to keep the Panthers out of end zone and took over on downs. Defenses ruled the second quarter as each defensive unit was able to hold each offense out of the end zone for the majority of the quarter. That was until the waning moments of the half when Steve Navalinksy and Jared Frantz connected on a 13 yd TD, a failed two point conversion attempt made the score 19-7 in favor of the Panthers at the half.

Steve Navalinsky to Jared Frantz

The third quarter was dominated by the Panthers as they were able to score two more touchdowns while not allowing Buckeye any opportunities. The first Panther score came on a 7 yd TD run from RB Dominic Stevenson, another failed two point attempt made the score 25-7 Panthers with 5:39 left in the third. Panthers would intercept May for a second time and return the ball 40 yds, setting the offense up on the Bucks 25 yd line. Two plays later Navalinsky would connect with RB Levi Ellis for a 20 yd TD pass, Ellis would also convert the two point attempt. At the end of the 3rd quarter Elyria Catholic held a comanding 33-7 lead.

Navalinsky to Levi Ellis 20 Yd TD pass

The Fourth Quarter featured an impressive defensive effort by both teams, each teams defense had goal line stands. Buckeye would find the end zone late in the game on a 17 yd TD pass from Jayden May to Bucks TE (and recent SOT Guest) Griffin Mitchell. Unfortunately for the visiting Bucks it was too little too late as the final score was 33-14 in favor of the Elyria Catholic Panthers.

Buckeye falls to 1-1 on the year and will look to rebound in week 5 as they play host to Parma Valley Forge (1-0).

The Elyria Catholic Panthers improve to 2-1 on the season and were led by QB Steve Navalinsky who had 3 TD passes on the night. The player(s) of the game is the defensive unit of the Panthers who’s highlights included 4 sacks, 2 INTs, 1 TD and a forced fumble. Elyria Catholic will go on the road in a Week 5 match up against Lakewood (0-4).
