Brooklyn, OH- Sports on Tap is always striving to bring you the very best in local high school sports action. In addition to our superb and in-depth coverage of High School Football, we will be venturing into a more in depth coverage of the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League. As we do throughout the football season, we will be traveling out to select league games, providing play by play coverage, social media coverage, and written coverage on our website. Our inaugural Game of the Week in the GCHSHL is a match up in the blue division between the Orange Lions (11-7, 5-1) and Brooklyn Hurricanes (4-6, 2-3). The Lions currently sit atop the Blue Division and look to stay that way against as they travel to take on the Hurricanes. It the SOT High School Hockey Game of the week!
The Hurricanes found themselves going to their bench as regular goalie Jason Edmonds was a scratch due to the flu. Junior Allen Fernandez was set to tend goal for the hurricanes. Brooklyn got on the board first with goal from senior forward Gavin Supek. Supek was assisted on the goal by senior Aaron Wrost. Hurricanes led 1-0 with 12:14 remaining in the 1st period. Orange would answer right back with a goal from forward Jason Kornbluth. Freshman Nathan Rice and Dillon Fellinger both getting assists on the goal. Orange tied the game 1-1 with 10:02 left in the 1st period. Kornbluth would score his second goal of the game later in the period, senior Tommy Hill credited with the assist, just like that Orange led 2-1 with 4:03 remaining in the 1st period. Orange was able to kill a Brooklyn Power play to end the 1st period leading 2-1.
Orange was able strike first in the 2nd period with a goal from senior Tommy Hill, Kornbluth credited with the assist. Orange led 3-1 with 11:15 left in the 2nd period. Brooklyn was able cut into the deficit thanks to an unassisted top shelf goal from senior Aaron Wrost, Orange now led 3-2 with 4:33 remaining. Orange would again extend their lead with an unassisted goal of their own by junior Zach McCarren, the Lion lead swelled 4-2. That score would hold as the 2nd period came to an end with the visiting Lions leading 4-2.
The Lions would assert their dominance in the 3rd period scoring three times in the final period to put game securely in the win column for Orange. Zach McCarren would score two goals in the period to give him a hat trick for the night. Orange would add another goal by Jackson Fellinger. The final score 7-2 in favor of he visiting Orange Lions.
The Brooklyn Hurricanes fall to 4-7 and 2-4 in league play. they were led in goal by first time goal Allen Fernandez who faced 36 shots on goal giving up 7 goals. Brooklyn will face Lakewood on 1/11/20.
The Orange Lions improve to 12-7 and 6-1 in league play, they were led in goal by Danny Moore who faced 23 shots on goal, allowing only 2 goals. The Lions were led by player of the game Zach McCarren who had 3 goals on the night, Jason Kornbluth had 2 goals and 3 assists on the night. Orange will look to continue their winning ways as they face Chagrin Falls on 1/11/20.
