Amherst, OH- Week 4 of the 2020 Season brought us to a battle atop the Southwestern Conference. There was a chill in the air as the two SWC teams were ready to square off from Mercy Health Stadium. Amherst comes in undefeated at 3-0, whereas Avon Lake is 2-1 looking to continue their winning ways after their Week 1 overtime loss versus Avon.
Avon Lake received the opening kickoff and made a statement. Establishing a long opening drive, featuring their senior star running back Gage Duesler. The Shoremen went 80 yards and capped it off with a 23 yard touchdown run by Shoremen RB Gage Duesler. Avon Lake led 7-0 with 8:45 left in the first quarter. Both teams were physical on both sides of the ball as drives stalled by both teams. The first quarter would end with the Shoremen leading 7-0.
That is what the score would be after one quarter.
In the second quarter the physical defense began to pickup. Amherst’s defense sacked Shoremen QB Michael Corbo 2 times on their first drive in the second quarter forcing a punt. The Comets established a nice long drive with runs by Torre Weatherspoon and passes from Senior QB Tyler Brezina to Ty Weatherspoon. The drive stalled by holding penalties that would force a punt with 4:16 left in the second quarter. The following series the Shoremen drive down the field and would finally strike in the second quarter with another Gage Duesler 6 yard touchdown run with 1:31 left in the second quarter. At halftime Avon Lake led the Comets 14-0.
In the third quarter Amherst came out with an impressive 12 play drive down to the Avon Lake 17 yard line. Comets running back Jonathan West looked to break free for extra yards when the Shoremen defense stripped the ball away and Avon Lake Senior Nathan Cikalo recovered the fumble at their own 3 yard line.
The third quarter would end with the Shoremen leading 14-0 and still on a drive that would continue into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Avon Lake continue to run the ball with Duesler, but did balance the passing game with Michael Corbo. The Shoremen’s passing game finally hit on a 29 yard pass from QB Michael Corbo to WR Mitchell Fedders that was thought to extend the Avon Lake lead to 21-0. A holding call would bring that play back.
The Shoremen would continue the drive running the ball with Duesler as he would get his third touchdown on the night with a 26 yard run with 3:56 left in the fourth quarter. Avon Lake led 21-0.
The Comets weren’t ready to fold yet, as they would score on the ensuing drive with a 65 yard touchdown catch/run by Amherst running back Alden Steele from QB Tyler Brezina. His speed out ran the Shoremen defense to keep the Amherst hopes alive as the score was 21-7 with 3:25 left. An onside kick try by the Comets was recovered by Avon Lake.
That is how this game would end as the Shoremen would improve to 3-1 (3-1) with a 21-7 road win over a tough Comets team who falls to 3-1 (3-1).
Week 5, Avon Lake will stay on the road taking on North Olmsted, as Amherst travels to battle Olmsted Falls.
