Week 4: Avon Lake runs past Amherst 21-7 in an SWC showdown.

By Rob Trautman

Amherst, OH- Week 4 of the 2020 Season brought us to a battle atop the Southwestern Conference. There was a chill in the air as the two SWC teams were ready to square off from Mercy Health Stadium. Amherst comes in undefeated at 3-0, whereas Avon Lake is 2-1 looking to continue their winning ways after their Week 1 overtime loss versus Avon.

Avon Lake received the opening kickoff and made a statement. Establishing a long opening drive, featuring their senior star running back Gage Duesler. The Shoremen went 80 yards and capped it off with a 23 yard touchdown run by Shoremen RB Gage Duesler. Avon Lake led 7-0 with 8:45 left in the first quarter. Both teams were physical on both sides of the ball as drives stalled by both teams. The first quarter would end with the Shoremen leading 7-0.

That is what the score would be after one quarter.

In the second quarter the physical defense began to pickup. Amherst’s defense sacked Shoremen QB Michael Corbo 2 times on their first drive in the second quarter forcing a punt. The Comets established a nice long drive with runs by Torre Weatherspoon and passes from Senior QB Tyler Brezina to Ty Weatherspoon. The drive stalled by holding penalties that would force a punt with 4:16 left in the second quarter. The following series the Shoremen drive down the field and would finally strike in the second quarter with another Gage Duesler 6 yard touchdown run with 1:31 left in the second quarter. At halftime Avon Lake led the Comets 14-0.

In the third quarter Amherst came out with an impressive 12 play drive down to the Avon Lake 17 yard line. Comets running back Jonathan West looked to break free for extra yards when the Shoremen defense stripped the ball away and Avon Lake Senior Nathan Cikalo recovered the fumble at their own 3 yard line.

The third quarter would end with the Shoremen leading 14-0 and still on a drive that would continue into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Avon Lake continue to run the ball with Duesler, but did balance the passing game with Michael Corbo. The Shoremen’s passing game finally hit on a 29 yard pass from QB Michael Corbo to WR Mitchell Fedders that was thought to extend the Avon Lake lead to 21-0. A holding call would bring that play back.

The Shoremen would continue the drive running the ball with Duesler as he would get his third touchdown on the night with a 26 yard run with 3:56 left in the fourth quarter. Avon Lake led 21-0.

The Comets weren’t ready to fold yet, as they would score on the ensuing drive with a 65 yard touchdown catch/run by Amherst running back Alden Steele from QB Tyler Brezina. His speed out ran the Shoremen defense to keep the Amherst hopes alive as the score was 21-7 with 3:25 left. An onside kick try by the Comets was recovered by Avon Lake.

That is how this game would end as the Shoremen would improve to 3-1 (3-1) with a 21-7 road win over a tough Comets team who falls to 3-1 (3-1).

Week 5, Avon Lake will stay on the road taking on North Olmsted, as Amherst travels to battle Olmsted Falls.

Notable Stats:

Avon Lake Shoremen

RB Gage Duesler had 25 carries for 204 yards and 3 TDs

Amherst Comets

BARON CUP II FINAL: Avon Lake Shoremen vs Amherst Comets

By Sean Duffy

Brooklyn, OH- Baron Cup II final features team from the White Division,  The #2 Seeded Avon Lake Shoremen defeated #7 Solon 3-2 in the Quarterfinals, and #6 Avon  4-3 in 2 OT in the semifinals to earn their spot in the championship game.  #1 seeded Amherst defeated #8 Aurora 6-1 in the quarterfinals, and #5 North Olmsted 8-1 in the semifinals. The top 2 seeds face off for the Baron Cup II Championship.

the 1st period started off with a lot of back and forth between the two teams. It was Amherst who drew first blood with a goal from Jacob Kramer, Comets led 1-0 with 8:32 remaining.  Jacob Kramer would score his second goal of the game shortly after that to give Amherst a 2-0 lead with 7:33 remaining.  Avon Lake was on the attack all period but finally broke through with a goal from Nick Ospelt to cut the comet lead to 2-1 with 2:30 remaining.  Amherst would again the extend the their lead with a goal from Nick Ciura. As the 1st period came to an end Amherst led Avon Lake by a score of 3-1.

The 2nd period started out much like the 1st period, as each team struggled to get anything going offensively.  Avon Lake’s Luke Farthing would score the first goal of the period, the Comets now led 3-2 with 9:11 remaining. Amherst’s Jacob Kramer would complete his hat trick scoring his third goal of the game, with 7:37 remaining in the period.  As the period came to an end Amherst had many opportunities to add to their lead but really great defense by Avon Lake, especially being short handed, kept the score 4-2 as the period game to an end. Heading into the 3rd period it the physicality and intensity for the players, coaches, and the fans was indeed palpable.

The 3rd period was an intense period for both squads, each team was in attack mode, and tried to capitalize on any advantage they could get. however, neither team was able to score a goal in the final period.  At the end the Amherst Comets were able to hold off Avon Lake for a 4-2 Victory.

Avon Lake finished runner up for the Baron Cup II and had goals from Nick Ospelt and Luke Farthing.

The Amherst Comets are the 2020 Baron Cup II Champion, it is the Comets 3rd straight Baron Cup II Championship.  Amherst was led by player of the game Jacob Kramer who scored 3 goals on the game for a hat trick. Amherst’s Nick Ciura also had a goal to go along with his 3 assists in the game

SOT High School Hockey Game of the Week: Olmsted Falls Bulldogs vs Amherst Comets

By  Sean Duffy

Elyria, OH- The to the Baron Cup is on and teams are looking to secure their place in the annual tournament for the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League.  Our game of the week takes us to the White North Division, as the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs come into the game at 11-7, 8-1, they currently sit in the second position in the White North, Amherst 20-4, 5-2 is sitting atop the division.  Both teams look to position themselves for a deep run in the Baron Cup and possibly the state playoffs.  One thing is for certain we are bound to see another great match up in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League.

The 1st period action got underway quickly as the Comets were on a constant attack in the Bulldogs zone.  Amherst would strike first on a goal from Sophomore Joey Kramer at the 11:11 mark the Comets led 1-0.  Not wanting to be outdone by his little brother, Senior Jacob Kramer knocked in a goal of his own at the 7:36 mark of the 1st period.  Olmsted Falls did get some flurries of action in the Comets zone however  outstanding defensive play from the comets goal tender Brady Grove held the Bulldogs scoreless.  At the end of the 1st period Amherst held a 2-0 Lead.

The Bulldogs came out in the 2nd period with a flurry of action that led to a goal by Tom Terrel,  at the 11:50 mark Amherst led 2-1.  Olmsted Falls’ Trevor Patton would score a goal at the 7:56 mark to tie the score 2-2.  Having missed a power play opportunity early in the period comets would not squander another as Joey Kramer would punch one in for the Comets giving him his second goal of the night, and the Comets the lead with 3:16 remaining in the period.  Less than thirty seconds later Bulldogs’ Cole Sigan would score on a breakaway goal and the game was again tied 3-3 with 2:52 left in the 2nd period.  Late in the period Jacob Kramer would score on an unassisted goal, his second of the night, and the period would come to an end with Amherst leading 4-3.

The 3rd period started off with some great defensive play by both teams. The Comets would score on a goal from Nick Ciura and extend their lead to 5-3 at 7:30 left in the period. Amherst’s Nathan Harmych would score thirty seconds later and the Comets led 6-3 with 7:00 remaining in the period.  Cole Sigan would score the only Bulldog goal of the period shortly thereafter, and just like that the score was 6-4 in favor of the Comets.  It was then the Kramer brothers show from that point on with both Jacob and Joey each scoring their 3rd goals of the night to secure the Amherst victory 8-4.

Olmsted Falls now sits 11-8, and 8-2 in league play.  They were led in scoring by Cole Sigan who had two goals on the night.  Olmsted Falls will play North Olmsted to finish out league play on 2/8.

Amherst improved 21-4, 6-2 in league play, they were led by co-players of the game Jacob and Joey Kramer each having 3 goals a piece.  the win secures the white north division for the comets and closes out their league play.  Amherst’s next game will be at the Baron Cup.

Great Game in Elyria

GAME ON!!!
