Week 7: North Olmsted outlasts Midview 48-45 in their First Round Playoff Matchup.
By Rob Trautman
North Olmsted, OH- If you don’t like offense, stop right here. This game produced excitement, big plays, and a first round matchup that scored 93 points between the two teams. On this night North Olmsted would make history by winning their first ever post season win 48-45.
In the first quarter we got a glimpse at what this night could be like. With 9:51 left in the first quarter North Olmsted quarterback Anthony Guercio started the scoring with a 43 yard touchdown pass too wide receiver Jared Kelley.
On the next series Midview quarterback Ethan Surdock was intercepted by Eagles defensive back Eric Wasen who took it to the house from 24 yards out. Quickly, North Olmsted jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Midview would answer back as quarterback Ethan Surdock would connect with wide receiver Connor Awad from 17 yards out. The score was 14-7. After a North Olmsted punt, the Middies would drive down the field and settle for a 27 yard field goal from kicker Kaiden Koch who hit a 27 yard field goal.
After 1 quarter of play North Olmsted led Midview 14-10.
In the Second quarter Midview would turn the ball over on an intercepted pass. The Eagles would put a nice drive together that would lead to a 5 yard touchdown run by Jio Rodriguez. The extra point was no good and North Olmsted led 20-10.
After a fumble by the Middies at 4:38 in the second quarter, the Eagles would drive into Middies territory where they would try for a 27 yard field goal. The ball sailed wide left. Midview would take over and establish a drive that took almost 3 minutes off of the clock. That would lead to a Surdock 3 yard touchdown run. The Middies cut the Eagles lead to 20-17 before half. North Olmsted wasn’t done as they got what looked to be a big score by Guercio to his wide receiver Macguire Savarino for 47 yards, but they got caught with an illegal man down field that wiped the touchdown away before half. North Olmsted would lead 20-17 at halftime.
The third quarter would start and it was the Eagles who would score first as Guercio would run it in from 4 yards out. North Olmsted now took a 27-17 lead.
The third quarter went back in forth with a flurry of scoring. Below are highlights from the third quarter. Midview captured the SportCenter Top Play with Surdock connecting with his wide receiver Bryce Newton. Take a look!
North Olmsted quarterback Anthony Guercio would run a touchdown in from 1 yard out to give the Eagles a 34-24 lead in the 3 quarter with 4:57 left.
The third quarter would end with Midview trailing North Olmsted 34-31.
The fourth quarter would start with both teams trading big play after big play. Neither team wanted to give up in this game. North Olmsted would strike on a 2 yard touchdown run by Guercio who extended their lead back to 10 points with a 48-38 lead with 7:25 left.
Once again the Middies were down but not out, scoring on a 1 yard touchdown run by Surdock that would cut the Eagles lead to 48-45.
Finally we saw some key defensive plays. Midview’s defense got the stop they needed to give them the ball back and a chance to tie or take the lead with 2:24 left in the game. The Middies would get a great drive, deep into North Olmsted Territory, but with :21 left in the game defensive back Daniel Davis would seal the deal with an interception that would give the Eagles their first ever postseason win.
Eagles win, 48-45 over the Middies in the First Round Playoffs! North Olmsted improves to 2-4 and will now face the Avon Eagles in the next round of the playoffs. Avon won the first matchup in Week 4, 42-14. Midview falls to 1-6.

Week 6: Pirates sail to a 31-0 win over Lakewood.
By Rob Trautman
Lakewood, OH- There was a chill in the air for our Friday Night High School Football game, between the Rocky River Pirates (2-1), and the host Lakewood Rangers (1-4). A GLC matchup that was a rivalry game for the Battle of the Bridge.
The First quarter had early momentum for the Lakewood Rangers as Rocky River running back John Bebie fumbled in their own territory giving the ball to Lakewood at the Rocky River 28 yard line. The Rangers couldn’t capitalize getting their field goal try blocked with three minutes left in the first quarter. Both teams couldn’t get much offense going, punting back and forth before the first quarter would end at 0-0.
In the Second quarter, momentum would swing to Rocky River and the Pirates finally would get a big run from QB Braedon Spies to set up a first and goal. Then, from there it was running back John BeBie as he would punch it in from 2 yards out. The Pirates would go for a two point conversion and get it to make their lead 8-0 with 10:53 left in the second quarter.
Then, a key Interception returned for a touchdown by once again John Bebie. This would be a key play that kept the Pirates rolling. The extra point was no good and Rocky River led 14-0 with 4:58 left in the second quarter. Turnovers would play a big part in this game as the Pirates would get another interception with 2:11 left in the second quarter. Rocky River would get down the the Lakewood 11 yard line where they would get a 28 yard field goal from kicker Mack Massad. At halftime the score was now 17-0.
After half the Pirates received the ball to open the third quarter where they would go on a 14 play 75 yard drive that would be capped off by a 1 yard touchdown run by John Bebie, who did everything on this night. The extra point was good and the score was 24-0 after three quarters. On this drive it was a heavy dose of running back John Bebie and a great connection with quarter Braedon Spies and wide receiver David Rosenberg. After three quarters it was Rocky River leading 24-0.
In the fourth quarter there was a lot of running the ball , but with 8:56 left in the game the Pirates would throw as quarterback Braedon Spies would connect with wide receiver Stan Heuler for a 12 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and Rocky River would sail to a 31-0 GLC win over Lakewood.
Rocky River would improve to 3-1 on the season as Lakewood falls to 1-4. Next up for the Pirates is playoff football as they host Lexington. Lakewood travels to Barberton to take on the Magics.
Player of the Game
Rocky River RB John Bebie– He scored 2 TDs on the ground and scored another touchdown on a pick six.
