BARON CUP I FINAL: Rocky River Pirates vs Mentor Cardinals

By Sean Duffy

Brooklyn OH- The Baron Cup I championship game features the top two teams in the Red Division.  The #2 seed Rocky River Pirates are 10-2 in league play and earned their way to the  championship game  by defeating #7 Cleveland Heights 10-0 in the quarter finals and the #3 Strongsville Mustangs 6-0 in the semifinals.  As the #1 seed Mentor earned a first round bye and defeated #4 Hudson 5-1 in the semifinals.  It is sure be a great matchup between the two top teams in the Red Division.

Mentor get on the board within the first minute of the game, Kyle Backston would score for the cardinals with 14:35 remaining.  Mentor would add to their lead shortly thereafter thanks to a goal from Cameron Mocny , Mentor led 2-0 with 13:06 remaining. The pirates saw things go from bad to worse as they would give up a power play goal to Kyle Backston, his second of the game,  Mentor now led 3-0 with 7:42 remaining in the period.  Mentor would score again this time getting a goal from Tyler Velionosikis.  At the end of the 1st period the momentum was squarely on the side of the Cardinals, while the Pirates will look to get something going in 2nd period to get back into the game as they found themselves in down 4-0.

While the 1st period saw Mentor build a 4 goal lead, the second period really showcased how Mentor protected that lead.  Goalie Alex Toth was under a constant barrage of shot from the Pirates.  Toth faced 22 shots in the period stopping but one, a goal by James Byall, and saw his team add another goal to their lead, a really impressive goal by Mitchell Elliot.  At the end of the 2nd period Mentor still held a 4 goal lead over Rocky River.  The Pirates again going to intermission looking for some way to come back.

The Mentor Cardinals were not allowing any miraculous comeback by the Pirates.  Led by Goalie Alex Toth, Did not allow a goal to  be scored in the third period.  Mentor’s Mitchell Elliot would add one more goal  late in the period.  That goal would be all that was needed as Mentor would emerge victorious 6-1 over the Rocky River Pirates.

Rocky River will finish in the runner up position for the Baron Cup I, they were led offensively by James Byall who scored the only pirate goal of the night.

Mentor wins its second consecutive Baron Cup I Championship.  Cardinals had goals from Mitchell Elliott and Kyle Backston each scoring two goals on the night. Cameron Mocny and Tyler Velioniskis each having one goal.  The Cardinals player of the game is goalie Alex Toth, surrendering only 1 goal on 49 shot attempts.

Congratulations to the 2020 Baron Cup I Champion Mentor Cardinals!

So long from Brooklyn

Rocky River held a commanding 6-2 lead as the second period came to a conclusion.

At the opening of the third period Strongsville had its work cut out for them as they were down four goals. However much like the first two periods Rocky River would dominate the period.  Rocky River would score three goals in the final period, 2 goals from Reece Rochester and another from Aiden Dempsey.  The third period would come to an end with the final score 9-2 in favor of the Rocky River Pirates.

The Strongsville Mustangs fall to 15-10 and 4-4 in Red division play.  they will look to rebound from this loss on 1/25/20 as they play host to Benedictine.

SOT Podcast Game of the Week: Bay Rockets vs Rocky River Pirates

By Sean Duffy

Rocky River, OH- We have three weeks left in the 2019 High School Football regular season. Our game of the week features a Great Lake Conference between the Bay  Rockets (5-2, 4-2) and the Rocky River Pirates (5-2, 4-2).  Both teams have identical records, but very different roads to travel in the Division III Region 10 playoff race.  According to the unofficial standings on joeeitel.com, Bay currently sits at #6 in the region, Rocky River sits at #11.  A win for each will increase their chances of making it into the top 8  at the end of the year, while a loss makes that road to the playoffs much more difficult.   Conference rivals, playoff implications for each team, what more could you ask for in Week 8?

Bay got the ball to start things off, it was clear from the beginning that they were going to utilize the run game, specifically RB Nick Buttari.  Buttari would carry the ball all of the drives 65 yds including the final two yards in to the end zone for a touchdown.  The Rockets were out to a 7-0 lead with 9:07 remaining in the quarter.  Rocky River would put together their own 65 yd scoring drive, they would also rely on the ball toting skills of their RB Tommy Bebie would score from 3 yds out.  A missed extra point made the score 7-6 in favor of the Rockets.  Both teams defenses would settle in and not allow another point to be scored in the quarter.

Rocky River seized momentum  as the second quarter began, stopping the Rockets on fourth down.  However they would cede that momentum back to Bay as QB Braedon Spies was intercepted and then returned for 46 yds  to set up the Rockets deep in Pirate territory.  Four plays later Bay QB Logan LaMere would plunge into the end zone for a 1 yd TD, a missed extra point made the score 13-6 with 5:37 remaining in the half.   Rocky River was beginning to find some offensive rhythm and was set up in Rocket territory, however Bay would stop the pirates on a 4th and inches and take over on downs.  Two plays later Rockets QB Logan LaMere would connect with WR Cullen Gergye for a 66 yd TD Pass. a made extra point made the score 20-6 with 2:09 remaining in half.  The pirates would run their two minute offense to perfection, going 71 yds in less that 1:30.  Rocky River would score on a 36 yd TD pass from QB Braedon Spies to WR Owen Bebie , the two would connect again to convert the two point attempt.  As the half came to an end the Rockets led 20-14, Rocky River would receive the 2nd half kickoff.

Rocky River started the half on their own 20 yd line and QB Braendon Spies would lead the rushing attack along with RB Tommy Bebie to get the ball all the way to the Rockets 3 yd line.  Bay’s Defense would not let the Pirates invade any further, holding them to a 20 yd field goal by Tommy Bebie, to make the score 20-17 with 6:51 remaining in the quarter. As in the first quarter the defensive units for each team were able to impose their will  and not allow any further points.  As the third quarter came to end Bay led 20-17.

The Rockets would the ball to open the fourth quarter already on the 25 yd line of Rocky River.  As they had all night the Rockets would run the ball with purpose.  Rocket RB Joe Galati would punch it in the end zone from 1 yd out, a made extra point made the score 27-17 with 8:40 remaining in the game.  Rocky River would then take the next kickoff all the way to the Rocket 21 yd line to attempt a 38 yd field goal.  The Rockets had other ideas as they wold block that attempt, recover the ball and return it all the way to their own 40 yd line.  The Rockets would the drive 60 yds for a decisive TD, Nick Buttari would score on a 6 yds run, his second of the night.  After a successful extra point  Bay led 34-17 with 2:02 remaining.  Bay Rockets would win over Rocky River with a final score of 34-17.

Rocky River falls to 5-3 over all and 3-3 in the Great Lakes Conference, they will look to rebound in week 9 when they travel to take on Buckeye.

Bay Village improves to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the Great Lakes Conference, They were led by player of the game RB Nick Buttari who finished with 33 carries 205 yds and 2 TDs. The Rockets will host Parma in week 9.

SOT Podcast Game of the Week: Rocky River Pirates Versus Fairview Park Warriors

By Rob Trautman

Fairview Park, OH- The SOT Game of the Week featured two neighborhood rivals trying to stay in the mix in the Great Lakes Conference. The visiting Rocky River Pirates are (1-1 0-1) and coming off of a 24-21 loss to the Valley Forge Patriots.  The Fairview Park Warriors are also (1-1 1-0) coming off of a big 42-14 win against Normandy.

It started as a hot and humid 90 degree night in Fairview Park, Ohio. Soon there would be a storm of scoring from both teams to start, before the rain and lighting would postpone the game.  Both teams punted to start the game with the defense playing fast and physical from both teams.  With 8:44 in the first quarter Fairview’s special teams blocked a punt that was snapped over the punters head deep into Pirates territory.  The Rocky River defense stood its ground as Fairview was unable to capitalize having to punt the ball back to the Pirates.  They did however pin them back at their own two yard line.  That didn’t seem to bother Rocky River’s offense who would score on a handoff to Pirates running back Tommy Bebie.  Bebie would go 98 yards for a Rocky River touchdown making it 6-0.  The Pirates would try a two point conversion, but they were unable to convert.  The score remained 6-0 Pirates in the first quarter with 6:12 remaining.

The Warriors would respond with a solid drive that was capped off by a 28-yard touchdown run by Fairview running back Matt Kaufmann.

The extra point was good and the Warriors led 7-6 in the first quarter with 1:12 left in the quarter.  Rocky River would get the ball back and turn it over before the first quarter would end. Fairview recovered the fumble and would be back into Rocky River territory to start the second quarter.

In the second quarter Fairview would drive down to the Rocky River 5 yard line before a penalty would push them back to the Pirates 10.  That drive would stall at the 10 yard line and the Warriors would bring put their Sophomore kicker David Nemeth who would connect on a 27 yard field goal to add on to their lead.  Fairview would now lead 10-6 in the second quarter  with 7:33 left.

Thats when the game was delayed because of lighting.  The storm calmed down and players tried to come out and stretch, but the lighting continued. The game was postponed till Saturday morning.

The game continued Saturday morning at 10am. Rocky River came out firing first scoring on a 59 yard touchdown pass from QB Braedon Spies to Christian Dean, the game was tied at 13 a piece.  The game was tied at 13 going into halftime.

Rocky River continued their offensive explosion in the third quarter outscoring  Fairview 14-0.  At the end of three quarters the Pirates led 27-13.

In the fourth quarter each team would score one touchdown a piece. The Pirates would win 34-20.
