GAME RECAP

The Westlake Boys Varsity Basketball Team continued its winning streak tonight on the road defeating conference foe Avon Lake 74-68.
The epic battle began with Blake Wolfe hitting a 3 pointer to start the game for the Demons. Austin Norris followed with a great defensive play and a bucket for 2. Avon Lake was hit with a technical foul and Nate Klima went to the line and made 1 out of 2. Justin Garcia, coming off a season high game, scored off an assist from Joe Klessel and followed it up with a 3 pointer, but the Shoremen followed with a 3 point shot to take a 19-16 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
The second quarter did not disappoint in this head to head game between the Demons and the Shoremen. Garcia fired up a 3 to start the 2nd quarter and both teams continued to exchange buckets. Klima caused a turnover, followed by a steal to the get Westlake fans up on their feet. With 25 seconds left, Klima went to the free throw line for a 3 point lead, but Avon Lake soon followed with a 3 point shot to tie the game 34-34 at halftime.
Avon Lake jumped out to a 6-0 run to start the third quarter, but Wolfe went deep for 3, followed by a drive to the basket by Dylan Bednar to get the offense going. Bednar soon left with an injury, which caused the Demons to be without one of its top defenders. Tyler Kolocouris quickly picked up the slack and played in his best game of the season. Ray Ellington hit his first of four 3 pointers to take the lead, but Avon Lake once again, went bucket for bucket with the Demons. Will Ostrowski drove down the middle for 2 to take a 54-52 lead into the final quarter.
The Shoremen stayed true to their competitive drive and opened up the quarter with another 6 point run before Garcia drove the lane for 2 points. With four minutes left and fans on the edge of their seats, Ellington shot back to back 3 pointers to take a 5 point lead. Klessel scored a quick basket with a minute left, and Garcia closed the deal at the line.
Nine Demons scored tonight, with Justin Garcia leading the team with 18 points, followed by a season high 14 points for Ellington, Klima 10, Kolocouris 8, Norris, Wolfe and Klessel scored 6 each, Ostrowski 4 and Bednar pitched in 2.
The Demons are 5-0 (3-0 conference) and play at home on Friday, December 20 against Berea Midpark. TipOff is at 7:15pm.
