VIDEO Highlights: OHSAA Football Playoffs, Regional Quarterfinal: Rocky River Beats Buckeye 32-15 to advance.

By Rob Trautman

Rocky River, OH- A Week 12 Second Round Playoff matchup featured two teams in the Great Lakes Conference. It was cold and you could hear the pads clashing with two teams that love to hit.

First Quarter both teams moved the ball down the field with little scoring. The only score was on a 40 yard field goal by Rocky River Kicker Mack Massad. After 1 quarter it was 3-0 Pirates.

In the second quarter Rocky River would add to their 3-0 lead with Pirates RB/LB Tommy Bebie scoring from 5 yards out, the XP was no good and the Pirates led 9-0 with 8:38 left in the second quarter. The Rocky River QB Braedon Spies threw a strike to WR Patrick Lange who made a great diving catch. The 2point conversion was no good and the Pirates led 15-0 with 2:19 left till half. Buckeye had many chance at the River 5 yard line but failed too core before half. The Pirates defense stood their ground and that was a big stance in the game.

The third quarter, Buckeye would finally get on the board with a RB Ben Barnes 4 yard touchdown.  He looked like he was stopped multiple times but he would not be denied. The XP was good and the third quarter would end at 15-7.

The 4th quarter had a few scores. First Rocky River Kicker Mack Massad would hit a 20 yard field goal and the River lead was 18-7.  With 6:48 left in the 4th quarter Buckeye would cut the Pirates lead to 18-15 with a 1 yard run by RB Ben Barnes, he would also score a 2point conversion. Rocky River would answer with another touchdown run from standout RB/LB Tommy Bebie. He would take it in from 15 yards out and the lead was 25-15 with 3:28 left in the 4th.  Bebie wasn’t done, putting the icing on the cake with a 73 yard touchdown run and the Pirates advance with a 32-15 win!

VIDEO Highlights: Week 9 SOT Featured Game: Mentor gets big win over Strongsville 21-9.

By Rob Trautman

Strongsville, OH- A Week 9 matchup that featured two teams from the Greater Cleveland Conference. The Mentor Cardinals have battled injuries but are looking to get back to their winning ways, losing 3 in a row, two of which were down to the wire. Strongsville has won their last two out of three games, which all three games were close.

In the first quarter Strongsville would score first with a nice drive that resulted in 3 points by Mustangs Kicker Will Hryszko. He was busy on this night, kicking 3 field goals. Strongsville’s starting QB Maddux Beard left early in the first quarter with an injury and Senior QB Michael Kenny replaced him the rest of the game. Mentor would answer right back with QB Jacob Snow connecting with WR Nick Farley, Mentor took a 7-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter Strongsville would again get close but have to settle for another Will Hryszko field goal that would cut the lead to 7-6 Cardinals lead. Mentor QB Jacob Snow would answer again connecting from 38 yards with WR Michael Norwood. Mentor extended their lead to 14-9. Mentor’s defense held Strongsville’s offense in check all night, and forced some key turnovers deep into Cardinals territory. Before half the Cardinals would get one more score with 28 seconds left from Mentor RB Mitchell Waite who ran it in from 3 yards out. At half the Cardinals led 21-6.

The second half was a stalemate, with some action but no scoring. Then, as the 4th quarter began, the rain started to downpour making conditions slick, and tough to hold onto the ball. Strongsville would get one more field goal from Will Hryszko but that would be it. Falling to the Cardinals 21-9.

Mentor improves to 4-5 on the year with a matchup with Euclid next. Strongsville falls to 5-4 with a rivalry game next against Brunswick.

VIDEO Highlights: Week 7 SOT Featured Game: Elyria gets first SWC win in dominating performance over North Ridgeville 30-0.

By Rob Trautman

Elyria OH- A Week 7 matchup that featured two teams from the Southwestern Conference. The North Ridgeville Rangers have played well and come into this game with a 3-3 overall record and the Pioneers of Elyria also come in with a 3-3 overall record and looking for their first win in the SWC.

In the first quarter the Pioneers would strike first with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Elyria QB Desmond Whitfield to WR Jaden Gilbert. The XP was no good and the Pioneers led 6-0 in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter Elyria would pound their running game, as RB Lance Glover would score from 8 yards out. They went for two and got it to extend the lead to 14-0. Still in the second quarter it was the dynamic duo of Elyria QB Desmond Whitfield connecting with WR Andrew Palos from 57 yards. They went for the two point conversion and got it . The score at halftime was 22-0.

The Pioneers would score once more in the second half en route to a 30-0 winner over the Rangers. Give credit to the Pioneers defense who shut out North Ridgeville. They forced a few turnovers and stopped the Rangers on some nice drives inside the red zone that led to no points. Elyria gets their first SWC win and get back to their winning ways. North Ridgeville looks to regroup and get back on track.

Elyria with the win improves to 4-3 (1-3) as they face Avon Lake in Week 8. North Ridgeville falls to 3-4 (1-3) and will travel to Midview next.

VIDEO Highlights: Week 6 SOT Featured Game: North Olmsted outlasts Westlake 41-20 to improve to 5-1 and a top the GLC.

North Olmsted, OH- A Week 6 matchup that used to be two Southwestern Conference foes battled as Great Lakes Conference foes this week. A perfect night for football under the lights on a Friday night as an important Great Lakes Conference matchup between the Westlake Demons (2-3) and the North Olmsted Eagles (4-1) featured our SOT Game of the Week.

It was the Eagles striking first on an 85 yard opening kickoff return by WR Eric Wasen outrunning the Demons special teams. Westlake would answer with a nice drive, that led to a touchdown run from RB Arrington Taylor. Both teams moved the ball efficiently but after one quarter the score was tied at 7 a piece.

The second quarter started and North Olmsted was in the red zone once again. QB Xavier Balson fumbled the snap but grabbed it and went around the right side for a touchdown outrunning the Westlake defense to the endzone. Westlake would answer with a RB Will Ostrowski 45 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14 with 6:58 left in the second quarter. The second quarter had North Olmsted score two more times and have a 27-14 lead at halftime.

Westlake would get as close as 27-20 with a pick 6 by DB Cooper Rummel.  A great job by the Eagles running attack as RB Sammy Capps carried the eagles in the second half for the big 41-20 win!  The Eagles defense also stopped a really good offense in the second half.

North Olmsted improves to 5-1 on the season and a top the GLC. They will take on Bay (3-2) in Week 7. Westlake falls to 2-4 and will host Elyria Catholic (4-2).

VIDEO Highlights: Week 4 SOT Featured Game: Lakewood Rangers stay undefeated, outlasting the Rocky River Pirates 21-14.

Rocky River, OH- A beautiful night set the stage for Week 4 of the high school football season in the Great lakes Conference. For our featured game we traveled to Rocky River High School where the visiting Lakewood Rangers looked to stay a perfect 4-0 as they took on the Rocky River Pirates. The atmosphere was electric and both teams were ready for a big GLC game in front of a great crowd.

It took 3 plays for Rocky River to strike first on a 45 yard touchdown run by RB Tommy Bebie. He was doing it all in the game, supplying the offense with big plays, but making crucial tackles on the defensive side of the ball as well. Lakewood would counter with a talented running back of their own in Hakeem Quran. Quran also played defense and made some nice open field tackles on the night. He answered with a screen pass from QB Luke Winters that hit pay dirt and tied the game at 7-7 with :46 left in the first half. In the second half it was Rocky River scoring first with QB Braedon Spies running it on and taking a 14-7 lead. Again, Lakewood would answer with a Hakeen Quran touchdown to tie the game 14-14. With 2:35 left in the game it was Hakeen Quran scoring from 9 yards out. That proved to be the difference as the Rangers held on the rest of the way. After having 7 touchdowns last week Quran scored all three touchdowns for the Rangers in this game. The Pirates had touchdowns from Tommy Bebie and QB Braedon Spies. Both defenses played physical and tough.

Lakewood outlasted Rocky River 21-14 to improve to 4-0 on the season with Normandy (1-3) up next. Rocky River falls to 2-2 and will face another tough opponent in week 5 Elyria Catholic.
