The game had a big game feel as the Strongsville Mustangs, in the midst of a two game losing streak, traveled to Medina to face the Bees who are fresh off a win against Elyria. Both teams sat tied in the GCC with a 4-2 record and an equal conference record at 1-2. It had all of the makings of a hard-nosed, tough battle, but Medina had different plans.
Strongsville won the coin toss and chose to receive the opening kick. The Mustangs first drive started at the 20 after a touchback and went a solid 9 plays before stalling at the 44 yard line. After a punt, the Bees took over on their own 30 and started the scoring quickly. Quarterback Ryan Gillespie threw a screen pass to Kyle Maruna, then he dropped back and threw to an open Nick Yanky for a 70 yard TD pass. The extra point was good and it was quickly 7-0, Medina early in the first.
The Strongsville offense had a difficult time getting their offense going in this game. Out of the four first quarter drives, Strongsville had to punt three times and turned the ball over on downs once. The score after one remained 7-0, in favor of Medina.
The Bees opened up the second quarter by continuing the drive. On forth down, Medina Kicker Ryan Miller was able to convert on a 29 yard field goal attempt which made the score 10-0 early in the second. Medina’s defense forced another Strongsville punt on their first possession of the second quarter. Quarterback Drew Allar came into the game for Medina for injured QB Ryan Gillespie and drove the Bees 34 yards, which was capped by an Allar 11 yard touchdown run.
The extra point was good and the Bees increased their lead to 17-0 midway through the first half. Strongsville used a heavy dose of Runningback Garret Clark to control the clock and keep the fast paced Medina offense off the field. Clark finished the first half with 17 rushes for 89 yards. They kept the Bees to only 33 plays while the Mustang offense ran 45. Even-though the offense ran more plays, Strongsville could not find any points and went into halftime trailing 17-0.
Medina came out of the locker room to start the second half on a mission to get the big plays going. QB Drew Allar hit Jacob Nanosky deep for a 57 yard touchdown pass extending the Bees lead to 24-0 with just 1:45 off the clock.
The Mustangs started on their own 20 after the touchback. Mustang QB Tyler Wolters was picked off by Jajuan Jackson in Strongsville territory. After a sack and a couple of penalties, the Bees were backed up all the way to the 50 when Allar hit Jacob Kasmarcak for a 50 yard score and a 31-0 lead with 6:26 left in the third forcing a running clock. After another Strongsville punt, Medina once again drove down the field. Allar hit Nanosky again, this time from 8 yards just before the quarter ended making the score 38-0.
