SOT Playoff Coverage: Barberton Magics vs Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees

By Sean Duffy

Brecksville, OH- On a dark and stormy night… we had a OHSAA Division II Region 6 quarterfinal match up between two teams from the Suburban League. The Barberton Magics came into this match up the 13th seed in the region and faced the high powered 5th seeded Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees.

The Bees were able to score first thanks in large part to the run game and RB Garrett Kubitz’s power running style led to a 1 yd TD run. a missed xp made the score 6-0 with 8:15 remaining in the first quarter. Bees would score again on 51 yd TD pass from QB Joe Labas to WR Luke Ganim, the 2pt conversion failed and the score at the end of the first quarter was 12-0 in favor of the Bees.

The second Quarter of the contest began with a 23 yd field goal from Aiden Minnick to give the Bees a 15-0 lead midway through the quarter. That is when mother nature cause a roughly 90 minute weather delay. After the weather delay the Bees picked up right where they left off with a 40 yd TD pass from Labas to WR Jeremy Jonozzo , a failed extra point made the score 21-0 in favor of the Bees. Barberton was finally able get on the board in the waning moments of the quarter thanks to a 41 yd TD pass from QB Chanden Lee to WR Charles Hornacek, a successful extra point made the score 21-7 after the second quarter.

The weather delay resulted in game moving right into the third quarter, and the Bees wasted no time methodically marching down the field, Garrett Kubitz would find the end zone from 20 yds out for his second rushing TD night, a successful extra point made the score 28-7 with 11:01 left in the third quarter. The Magics would answer with a score on the subsequent drive, Chanden Lee would find WR Hayden Macko for a 9 yd TD , a made extra point made the score 28-14 with 7:54 left in the quarter. Bees QB Joe Labas would find the end zone twice to close out the quarter; the first came on a 16 yd TD run, 2 pt attempt failed. The second came on a 52 yd TD pass to Jonozzo for his second TD of the night. at the end of the third quarter Brecksville held a 41-14 lead over Barberton.

Barberton would open the fourth quarter with a 55 yd TD Pass from Chanden Lee to WR Kaige Lowe, missed point made the score 41- 20 with 11:33 remaining in the game. Bees RB Garrett Kubitz took over from that point with two rushing TDs, once from 32 yds, the other from 47 yds. Kubitz finished the night with 4 TDs, and the Bees now led 55-20 with 7:44 and a running clock left in the game. The Magics would score TD, a 11 yd TD pass from Lee to Hornacek, and also secure a safety in the final quarter. However that would not be enough as Brecksville-Broadview Heights comes away with a 55-30 victory to move on in Divsion II Region 6.

The Magics were led offensively by QB Chanden Lee who finished the game with 4 TD passes. WR Charles Hornacek had 2 TD Receptions of the night for the Magics. Barberton is 3-6 on the year, and currently do not have a game scheduled for week 10.

The Bees were led by RB Garrett Kubitz who had 4 rushing TDs on the night. QB Joe Labas finished the night with 3 passing TDs and 1 Rush TD, WR Jeremy Jonozzo had 2 TD receptions on the night. Brecksville-Broadview Heights will move on to the Division II Region 6 Semifinals and will face the winner of the Highland/Avon quarterfinal match up.

STORY: North Royalton Edges Olmsted Falls 33-27 in OT.

North Royalton versus Olmsted Falls

By Rick Shultz

Olmsted Falls, OH- A second season was all the twenty-two seed North Royalton Bears needed to get going as they find themselves heading into the quarterfinals of the Division 2 Region 6 OHSAA playoffs. The Bears entered the playoffs with an 0-6 record and last week traveled to tenth seeded Amherst Comets and shocked them in triple overtime 48-45. It was their first playoff win in school history. Last night the Bears just needed two overtimes to knock off another Southwestern Conference team on the road when they defeated the sixth seeded Olmsted Falls Bulldogs 33-27.

North Royalton and Olmsted Falls were once non-conference opponents for an 8-year stretch from 1994 to 2001 when the Bears were in the Pioneer Conference. The Bulldogs won seven of those eight meetings with the Bears ironically winning their only meeting in the 1995 season, 10-6 in overtime of course.

The game started out fast as the Bears received the opening kick and only took five plays to score as 6’2” 205-pound Junior running back Zadan Abuhamdeh broke free for a 61-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs needed just three plays as Sophomore running back Jack Pinchek made some nice cuts and outrunning the defense for a 51-yard scamper. A missed extra point had North Royalton leading 7-6. After a three and out and a short punt, Olmsted Falls looked to be locked in as they ran the ball five times and hit paydirt on a 25-yard run by another Sophomore Rocco Conti. This time the extra point by Senior Drew Kanaba was good, and the Bulldogs lead 13-7. Olmsted Falls defense held North Royalton once again to a punt, but this time the Bears defense held and got a stop that they needed to halt the momentum.

The second quarter was all North Royalton as the Bears took over at their own 40 after a nearly blocked punt. They then methodically marched down the field as it took 12 plays to go 60 yards where Abuhamdeh punched it in from the 1-yard line and the extra point was good by Sophomore Aleksandar Rajcevic making it a 14-13 advantage. The Bulldogs next possession was stopped after nine plays at the North Royalton 37 where they were forced to punt. North Royalton needed just three plays this time as Junior quarterback Mike Piazza found Senior wide receiver Omar Abuhamdeh for a 68-yard strike bring the score to 20-13 after the extra point was missed. Falls tried to answer as they were driving at the end of the quarter getting to the Bears 23-yard line but getting stopped on three consecutive plays to force a 39-yard field goal attempt. The Bears made sure the Bulldogs could not capitalize as several defenders got through and blocked the attempt.

The second half opened with Olmsted Falls driving down the field as Senior running back Andrew Parkowski powered his way into the endzone from the 3-yard line and with a good point after, the score knotted up 20-20. It seemed the Bulldogs had the edge in the half as they drove down the field on their next two drives but turned it over on downs at the Bears 25-yard line. Their next possession they drove the ball down to the North Royalton 25-yard line once again where they missed the go-ahead field goal with 1:26 remaining. As their offense only mustered 71 total yards in the half, the Bears defense refused to give up any big plays and kept their team in position to win.

North Royalton got the ball to start the first overtime where they took just four plays to score as quarterback Piazza snuck it in to take the 27-20 advantage. Olmsted Falls’ Conti evened up the score at 27 with a 6-yard run of his own, his second of the game.

The Bears’ defense was certainly the difference in the game as they intercepted Olmsted Falls Junior quarterback Charlie Ciolek after forcing them into a third and long and put their offense in position to make their second upset in consecutive weeks. The Bears needed just four plays as Piazza found Matthew Vansteenlandt for a 7-yard touchdown. The Bears win 33-27 in OT.

The 2-6 Bears will travel to 6-1 Avon Lake next week to take on the Shoremen who are coming off a 30-7 winner over Wadsworth. The Bears find themselves as one of the final 32 teams left in the Division 2 playoffs and will also be looking to go 3-0 against the SWC in this postseason.

SOT Playoff Coverage: Wadsworth Grizzlies vs Avon Lake Shoremen

Wadsworth vs Avon Lake

By Sean Duffy

Avon Lake, OH- It is the second round of the Division II OHSAA High School Football playoff tournament. Region Six of Division II is always a highly competitive region featuring hard hitting action. This week’s spotlight playoff game is no different as #14 seed Wadsworth travels to face #3 seed Avon Lake. Wadsworth (2-4) advanced to the second round with a win over Westlake in the first round, Avon Lake earned a first round bye. Each of these teams look to keep their playoff journey on track with a win and trip to the Division II Region 6 Quarterfinals .

The First quarter was a battle of defenses as each team’s defense would force a turnover on downs. The turning point came on a Shoremen interception of Wadsworth QB Mitchell Evans deep in Grizzlies Territory. Wadsworth was able to keep the Shoremen out of the end zone, settling for a 32 yd field goal from Avon Lake kicker Owen Wiley. at the end of the first quarter Avon Lake led Wadsworth 3-0.

The Shoremen would find the endzone early in the second half as RB Gage Duesler would get loose for a 66 yd touchdown run, the successful point after gave Avon Lake a 10-0 lead with 11:34 remaining in the first half. Wadsworth would respond with a touchdown on their next offensive possession when QB Mitchell Evans connected with WR Garrett Labus for a 28 yd TD , Wadsworth cut the lead to 10-7 with 8:42 left in the first half. Avon Lake’s Owen Wiley would add another field goal, this time from 34 yds to give the Shoremen a 13-7 lead as the first half came to a close.

Avon Lake got the ball to start the third quarter and put together a drive that went 75 yds and took over seven minutes off of the clock. Avon Lake QB Micheal Corbo would cap the drive off with a 1 yd TD plunge. that would be the only points scored, at the end of the third quarter Avon Lake led 20-7.

Avon Lake QB Michael Corbo’s TD plunge!!

Avon Lake would again put together a drive that ate up a lot of time early in the fourth quarter, Owen Wiley’s 36 yd field goal would increase the Shoremen lead to 23-7 midway through the fourth quarter. Wadsworth QB Mitchell Evans would be picked off twice in this quarter, the second being the most costly as Shoremen DB Nathan Cikalo would take the interception 53 yds for the TD. That interception proved to be the final nail in the Wadsworth coffin as they lose to Avon Lake by a final score of 30-7.

Avon Lake is now on to the Division II Region 6 Quarter Finals against #22 seed North Royalton. North Royalton defeated #6 Seed Olmsted Falls in 2OT in the second round.
